Hanks has been active in NASA’s manned space program for many years.  Having starred in Apollo 13, a film about the Apollo program, Hanks has remained a part of the ongoing mission.  He is a member of the National Space Society and produced the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon.  He also co-wrote a film, Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D, about the moon landings.

 

He is also an honorary member of the United States Army Rangers Hall of Fame for his portrayal of his character in Saving Private Ryan.  He served as the national spokesperson for the World War II Memorial Campaign and produced the Emmy winning miniseries Band of Brothers, set in WWII.
