Heston also fought alongside many civil rights leaders, including many other actors, during the civil rights movement of the mid and late 60s. At a screening of one of his films, Heston went so far as to join the picket lines, due to the fact the theater was segregated at the time. During the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, Heston accompanied Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
