1920 – He was born this year in San Francisco, California. He was the son of both country doctors. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, attended Tulare Union High School in Tulare, California, where he became the valedictorian, and Rutherford Preparatory School in Long Beach.
1939 – At the age of 19 years old, he was accepted to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
1940 – He was a two-time winner of the June Week Public Speaking Contest.
1941 – He also participated in intercollegiate debating and was a Company Commander.
1942 – He graduated with distinction and was commissioned as an ensign on the 19th day of June this year.
1944 – He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor device for "heroic service as Evaluator in the Combat Information Center…in action against enemy Japanese battleships during the Battle for Leyte Gulf, on the 25th day of October this year.
1945 – After the World War II, he continued to serve until December 8 as the prize crew officer of the HIMJS Ataka, a 1,200-ton Japanese river gunboat with a crew of 200.
1946 – He then served as executive officer of the destroyer USS Saufley, was transferred to the destroyer USS Zellars, as Executive Officer and Navigation.
1948 – He was assigned to the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit of the University of North Carolina, he remained for two years.
1951 – He joined the battleship USS Wisconsin as Navigator
